Training description
The Materials Science & Engineering Department covers all aspects of the field, i.e.: metals and alloys; ceramics and glasses; polymers and composites; semiconductors; processing, shaping, fabrication and joining of materials; thin film technologies; chemical, physical and mechanical properties, etc. Most industrial sectors are concerned by materials and employ our graduates, like the materials industry (metallurgy, polymer and composites industries
), the transportation industry (aeronautics, automobile, ship building
), energy production (fossile, nuclear, renewables, energy storage and conversion
), microelectronics, biomaterials, etc.
The aim is to train engineers to one of the following jobs: (1) welding engineer, being able to design welded structures, to manage their manufacture, to control them, and to choose and characterize metallic alloys for such structures; (2) polymers and composite materials engineer, able to choose and characterize materials, to design polymeric and composite materials parts, and to optimize and simulate fabrication processes; and (3) research & development engineer, able to cope with materials problems in industry, where organization skills and intellectual property or funding issues are as important as technical skills.
